Disassembly and Testing of Graco My Size 65 Convertible Car Seat

The following guide will show how HealthyStuff.org tested the Graco My Size 65 Convertible Car Seat for chemical hazards.

We are particularly interested in identifying the flame retardant chemistry used in car seats. Our test found two flame retardants in this product:

Thin PU Foam layer (laminated to green textile): Triethyl phosphate, Tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP)

EPS foam: 5,110 ppm Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD)

This is first of series of car seat tests we will be conducting this year.

Remember: Always use a car seat! Car seat are vital safety devices and regardless of our test results you should always use a car seat with your child.

Step 1

  • The Graco My Size 65 Convertible Car Seat used for this study was manufactured on January 13, 2014, purchased at Babys "R" Us in Michigan. The guide below will show how the plastic base, the upholstery, the harness and straps of the car seats, were tested with HDXRF analyzer for chemical composition.

Step 2

  • The upholstery of the Graco My Size 65 was examined first. The upholstery of the car seat entails the textile, polyurethane foam underneath the green textile and the polyester fiber filler.
  • The wave pattern textile of the car seat contained high levels of bromine (Br) - 38% by weight. Subsequent laboratory analysis by GC/MS was not able to identify source of the bromine in the seat fabric. Both the interior of the textile and the underlying polyurethane foam had high levels of Sb and Sn and low levels of Br and Cl.
  • The car seat textile and the underlying polyurethane foam were tested for flame retardants by an external lab.
  • Textile: Unable to identify source of bromine.
  • PU Foam (laminated to green textile): Triethyl phosphate, Tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP)
  • TBEP is a non-halogenated flame retardant which has no been extensively stduied

Step 3

  • The harness of the car seat consists of the buckle, the clips and straps.
  • The car seat’s buckle and harness straps contained very low levels (<40 ppm) of metals. The buckle contained 1,500 ppm chlorine which indicates a unknown type of chlorine chemistry compound in the buckle.

Step 4

  • Finally, the plastics of the car seat were tested. The plastic components include the hard plastic (like the base of the car seat) and soft or interior plastics (that are not visible), and the polystyrene foam found in the head rest of the car seat.
  • The exterior plastics tested very clean. The hard EPS foam (images 2 and 3), however, had high levels of Br in addition to significant levels of Antimony ( another flame retardant chemical).
  • EPS foam: 5,110 ppm Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD)
